This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated, experienced and ambitious journalist to join Retail Week as a Senior Reporter. 

As part of a fast-paced content team, you will be expected to contribute agenda-setting exclusive news stories, features, analyses and opinion pieces for our industry-leading website. Retail is one of the most exciting, dynamic and rapidly changing industries to cover. It impacts everyone’s lives and employs 3 million people as the UK’s largest private sector employer. The industry is going through unprecedented change as it embraces new technologies ranging from cashless stores to the metaverse, while navigating inflationary pressures, supply chain problems and the cost-of-living crisis.

In this role as a senior reporter, you will be expected to contribute new and innovative ideas to shape and develop our content output. You should be an entrepreneurial self-starter who constantly thinks about what content is valuable for our readers and come up with new ways of delivering that to them. 

You will also represent Retail Week at industry events - including some evening functions - and in the media through TV and radio appearances. Travel, including some international travel, will therefore be required.  

 

Key accountabilities

  • As a senior reporter at Retail Week, you will work in a content team of journalists, analysts, data experts, product editors and event producers. Your role will be to report on businesses within the retail sector; build, nurture and maintain contacts across the industry; and interview board level directors, including chief executives. 

  • You will play a key role in delivering news and analysis to our audience of senior retailers that keeps them informed of key industry changes and helps them make better decisions in their roles. 

  • You will also be expected to play a part in our live events, chairing panels and conducting fireside chats with relevant spokespeople.   

  • You are an advocate and ally for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Skills, experience & qualifications required

  • The successful candidate will be a well-established reporter looking to take their next step on the journalism ladder, and will ideally have experience of covering retail or business, either for a local paper, national newspaper or B2B publication.

  • Experience of writing news and longer form content to strict deadlines is essential. 

  • You are a team player and people person, with the ability to build and nurture strong working relationships with c-suite retailers and our team of reporters. 

  • You are comfortable handling the pressures that come with working as part of a fast-paced content team that is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our subscribers. 

  • You will be enthusiastic, organised and be able to multitask, since you will be expected to juggle multiple pieces of content at any given time. 

  • Most importantly, you are inquisitive, always seeking to tell the full story, and be passionate about delivering engaging and insightful content.     

  • Digital broadcast skills, such as presenting, producing and editing video or podcasts, would be beneficial, as would experience of Google Drive, content management systems and SEO.
